What do you understand by the term – ‘Mental Health’

Mental Health is one of the most commonly misunderstood terms even after being used daily for one or the other reason. Let us get a clearer idea about the real meaning of the term.

‘Mental Health’ is frequently used to substitute mental conditions like depressionschizophreniaanxiety, paranoia and others. However, it is a state of well-being in which every person realizes their potential, copes with life’s normal stresses, works productively and makes proactive contribution to their community. So this definition of mental health shows that it is more about wellness and less about illness.

There is a vast difference between the two terms – ‘mental health’ and ‘mental health conditions’. While the former represents well-functioning and feeling good, the latter represents the symptoms that affect the feelings, behaviors, thoughts and functioning of a person’s mental state. Mental health conditions not only cause distress but also hamper an individual’s capacity to function normally and perform their day-to-day activities.

Now if anyone is not experiencing the symptoms of a mental health condition, it does not imply that their mental health is in a flourishing state. It is quite possible to be diagnosed with a condition while feeling good about many of life’s aspects. To conclude, mental health is collectively about cognitive, emotional and social health and not just about the absence or presence of a mental health condition. So, even the smallest of symptoms is not supposed to be taken lightly.

People living in metros cities are more prone to mental health issues because of the stress caused by the hectic work schedule along with other factors. So this makes just a regular chit-chat session with a psychologist, a must.
