Therapies that can help you overcome Depression

Changing is tough. Lots of things are hard when you’re extremely depressed. Getting up in the morning, doing everyday task, looking for the will to go on, energy to complete the task, sleepless nights, extreme sadness and so on….

It’s a difficult battle, isn’t it?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

The basic idea of cognitive-behavioural therapy is that the thoughts and feelings play a fundamental role in our behaviour. It addresses the emotional challenges and is a goal-oriented therapy and works best when a patient takes an active role. One aspect of CBT is that it helps a person recognize the automatic thoughts or core beliefs that contribute to negative emotions. The behavioural aspect of CBT takes place after a person has a calmer state of mind.

Interpersonal Therapy (IT)

It is a form of psychotherapy which focuses on the way people relate to other people in their lives. How they communicate and express themselves is focused during this therapy. The therapist is focused on understanding whether the person is assertive, aggressive or timid or has “social skills” is seen as a key. The therapy emphasis on finding solutions to current problems and to communicate better with others and address problems that contribute to depression.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy is a very structured form of therapy based on a synthesis of self-acceptance and change. It incorporates techniques geared towards validation and tolerance, as well as techniques that will improve certain behaviours. The therapist assures the patient that their behaviour; feelings are valid and understandable. The therapist coaches the person to understand that it is their personal responsibility to change their unhealthy or disruptive behaviour.

Family-Focused Therapy (FFT)

Family-Focused Therapy works to identify difficulties and conflicts among family and support system members that may be impacting the person’s health. Family members find constructive ways to help each other and due to this elasticity, family therapy is useful in a wide range of situation i.e. from childhood to adult. Family therapist usually works within family groups but often includes work with people on an individual basis or, when appropriate, individual session. The therapy aims to prevent “burning out” or disengaging from the effort. Often the person experiencing the mental health condition will attend sessions with a support system or family members.
